Queensland is located north of NSW and is often referred to as the "Sunshine State." Brisbane, the capital city, is nestled in the south-eastern corner of the state, where the climate is "fantastic one day and perfect the next!" From this mild sub-tropical environment flowing north and west is a network of road, rail and air links that join the various regional centres into one state.

The temperate south of the state has only two main seasons - a long exciting summer and a brief sunny winter. The northern half of the state lies above the Tropic of Capricorn and experiences monsoonal conditions that mean between May and November the weather rarely exceeds a sunny 38ºC but between December and April is can be very wet as well as warm. Away from the coast, western Queensland is hot and dry, relying on water running off the Gulf Country to renew life each wet season.

Radiating from the fertile coastal pocket around south-eastern Brisbane, is the coastal strip going north to Cairns, the highland area just inland from the coast and the usually dry sparcely vegetated inland regions. Expect to seethe unusual. It is a land of contrasts from dry rugged areas in the west to a spectacular marine park we know as the Great Barrier Reef.

Queensland’s Gold Coast and Great Barrier Reef destinations are world renowned tourist destinations. However, a trip to the outback centres of Longreach and north to Cape York will enhance the diversity of the State. A trip north along the coast will take you through a wide variety of vegetation types including wide areas of sugar cane growing.

What
To Take & What To Wear
|
|
Queensland is and extremely casual destination. Good casual clothes would suffice for most visits. Very casual, beach clothing may be worn quite frequently, especially at tourist destinations. More formal, heavy clothing is not usually necessary.
