South Australia is situated in the southern half of Australia, between Victoria and Western Australia. Adelaide is the capital city and is peculiar for its spacious, well design city lay-out and its elegant architecture. South Australia. The Adelaide hills are beautiful with many trees planted from around the world, including England. SA was settled by FREE immigrants, with no Penal Colonies. Many immigrants settling in the Hills, Barossa etc from Germany. They started the wine industry in SA.

 Climate
We have 4 seasons, similar to Victoria, without their heavy rain falls. Our autumn is beautiful with the deciduous trees. The environment gets dry away from Adelaide coastal areas where It starts to record a low rain fall, around Port Wakefield, Murray Bridge, Strathalbyn. The more inland you go the dryer it gets. There are green areas around the Murray River, where we grow Fruit Trees. So as you can see we have a diverse landscape, not just a dry one. .

Regional Highlights

Distance is the tyranny of South Australia. Most places are a long way apart. Bear this in mind as you visit the Barossa Valley or the extinct volcanic crater of Mt Gambier. It takes a good day to travel by car to Coober Pedy as it does to the Flinders Rangers. The overland railway stretches west from Port Augusta as does the coastline. However, you need to be going to Western Australia to fully appreciate the extent of this part of South Australia.

Geography & Landscape

South Australia is a dry sparsely vegetated state, with most arable land concentrated into the south eastern section of the state. It also has a fairly flat landscape, with only the occasional rocky outcrop. Inland areas contain numerous dry salt beds where Spinifex is the predominant grass.

 Major Attractions
South Australia’s Arts Festival, held every even year, is the highlight of the calendar. It is one of the oldest running and most successful festivals of its kind in Australia. Venturing out and around from Adelaide, a visit to the grape growing areas of the Barossa Valley to the east, the wilderness areas of the Flinders Ranges to the north and the exotic opal mining areas of Coober Pedy to the north and inland. Kangaroo Island has become one of SA’s most sought-after tourist locations in recent years.

Day-trippers from Adelaide can see and experience nocturnal fairy penguin tours, wildlife tours, honey farming, eucalyptus distilling and lots more.

 What To Take & What To Wear
While South Australia continues the Australian theme of casualness in its dress habits, it does boast a fine sense of style. A better quality of clothing can be found amongst its inhabitants. Again, dress for the season. In summer the weather can suddenly turn cool, so a jacket of some sort is essential. In winter you need to dress accordingly, especially to protect against the wind.
