Features
Tasmania is Australia’s island state and only 67,000 square kilometres in area. It is often called the "Apple Isle" because of its large apple growing area. Unfortunately, in recent years the industry has contracted markedly, but none the less the name remains. In recent years Tasmania has become better known for its conservation measures such as in the Franklin area.

Hobart, the state’s capital, is the destination for the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and the site of Australia’s first casino.

 Climate
Tasmania has a cool to mild climate. Rain can fall all year around. Summers(over year end) can be mild with the occasional warm day reaching into the mid 30 degrees Centigrade. Winters can be quite cold as well as windy. While snow does not settle across the countryside, extensive pockets can be found at most times.

Regional Highlights

As mentioned above, the state sports a great diversity of tourist locations. However, no matter where you start and finish, some time spent in Hobart to the south and Launceston in the north is essential. Travel along the Midland Highway with excursions off to the east and west will reward the curious traveller.

Geography & Landscape

Tasmania is a rugged, tree covered island. Many areas to the south west, west and north west are quite inaccessible and covered by forest. Areas to the east and south east are strewn with small islands that form a magnet to mariners.

 Major Attractions
Tasmania’s uniqueness can start with a trip across Bass Strait from the Australian mainland by overnight ferry. You can even bring your car or hire one when you arrive. Tasmania’s excellent road system allows you to explore this unique, rugged, and beautiful piece of Australia.

Experience a cruise on an inland lake, or walk the famous Cradle Mountain Track. Travel to the east coast and soak up the relaxed lifestyle. A must is a visit to the infamous Port Arthur convict prison ruins

What To Take & What To Wear
Be prepared for cool windy weather. While Tasmanians dress casually, they also dress to match the climate and you should do so too.
